ESEA HERITAGE MONTH 2026:
EVOLVING THREADS
WHAT IS OUR 2026 THEME,
“evolving threads”?
Every September, besea.n invites you to enjoy a month-long, collaborative programme of events, dedicated to East and South East Asian heritage, culture, history and solidarity. It’s a chance to celebrate, acknowledge and learn about the incredible ways in which our communities have helped shape the UK and respond to its changing tides, as well as reaffirm or create new community bonds and movements.
This year, ESEA Heritage Month invites us to reflect on the theme “Evolving Threads”, honouring the ways in which our stories, actions and solidarities are continuously woven together across time, place, and community.
Communities move, adapt, and grow, shaped by migration, geopolitics, and creativity. Our theme this year recognises that the experiences of East and Southeast Asian communities are deeply interconnected across generations, borders and movements.
From community kitchens to mutual aid networks, from migrant journeys to climate justice campaigns, our threads intersect with those of other communities facing displacement, inequality, and systemic oppression. Our evolving threads help us to build coalitions across communities, groups and movements, drawing on the lessons of the past and the realities of the present to imagine new futures.
This theme calls attention to:
Adaptability: how our communities navigate change, preserve culture, and reimagine identity in shifting political and social landscapes.
Interconnectedness: the threads tying us to each other and to wider narratives, reminding us that no movement or community exists in isolation.
Solidarity: the ongoing work of showing up for each other across differences, forging imperfect, messy yet necessary alliances.
We encourage you to interpret the theme as freely as you like. “Evolving Threads” asks us to honour the past, recognise the networks of today, and take responsibility for the connections of tomorrow and beyond.
the peiwen legacy fund
The Peiwen Legacy Fund is a low-barrier, flexible, financial resource to honour our friend and fellow organiser Peiwen Tian, who sadly passed away 2024.
In Peiwen’s spirit of care, joy and grassroots solidarity, the fund is designed to be simple and accessible — with minimal paperwork and no complex requirements.
We hope to be able to offer the fund as a permanent feature for every ESEA Heritage Month, as a means of distributing unrestricted cash to grassroots organisations and individuals planning community-building events during the month of September. Whether you're putting on a small gathering, a creative workshop, or a local celebration — we want to support you.
Please note: applications are now closed for 2025. Thank you for your interest.
Donations
We’re a completely volunteer-led organisation. Every donation we receive goes directly into running ESEA Heritage Month and, more recently, supporting others through the Peiwen Legacy Fund.
Your support helps us keep community-building events going — from covering essential costs to putting cash directly into the hands of grassroots organisers.
If you'd like to contribute, our Ko-fi link is below. Every donation, no matter the size, makes a real difference. Thank you!
